❤️Let’s talk eczema ❤️

At 6 weeks old my son started to get a little bit of eczema. It wasn’t a huge surprise as both me and hubby had suffered from it as children.  At my 6 week check I mentioned it to the GP who told me to put aqueous cream on it. Almost over night it became so much worse. Within days his eczema was all over his body and he was very distressed by it.

So I went back to the Drs who helpfully told me he’d never seen eczema so bad on someone so young. I was very upset but after several visits managed to pull myself together enough to ask to be referred onto someone who might be able to help.

So I guess I just wanted to share a few things we learnt along the way:

❤️ Aqueous cream is not recommended for eczema anymore. The NHS website states this also and has done for a number of years. I know this was fed back to the Dr at the time.

❤️ Finding an emollient cream that works for your skin is a bit trial and error. Some creams that work for one won’t necessarily work for yours. We tried 3 or 4 creams before we found one.

❤️ The emollient you use in the winter might be too ‘heavy’ for your skin in the summer. It’s possible to get a heat rash from emollient, so you might need to switch to a lotion in the summer.

❤️ Food can have a big impact on your skin. My son was shortly after this diagnosed with CMPA and once this had been cut out it made the world of difference. It didn’t happen over night but took a few months before we saw the full impact.

❤️ Steroid cream. The advise we were given is to hit the eczema hard and get rid of it. That meant using a mixture of steroid creams to get rid of the eczema. Once the skin has improved you can then look after it through a good emollient. This worked for us and now my son is 5 he has pretty much grown out of his eczema.

❤️ Wash powder and not liquid is often better for more sensitive skin. Not sure why but it definitely improved things for us.

❤️ Eczema can be really hard to see on your baby especially when it’s in their face, so remember to be kind to yourself too! In the really days I really struggled to take photos of him but it’s important to capture the moments then too.

❤️ Finally trust your parenting instinct. If something isn’t working then say so!

Was this the same for you and your little ones?

If you have any fab tips that helped you please share them below as you never know!

This is what led me to looking at organic clothing because while it might seem fairly obvious that what is on your skin can make a difference, it didn’t really occur to me until I was frantically reading google to try and help my son! 🤦‍♀️😆

This is what led me to only using organic fabric for all of my makes. It really can make a difference!
